One of my patients once told me “A good doctor knows medicine, a great doctor knows the patient.”My practice of general internal medicine is designed to get to know you well. This begins with a comprehensive history and physical exam that not only is critical to disease management but is very important in wellness and disease prevention.

At the beginning of my private practice of internal medicine in 1982, I scheduled every new patient for a complete physical (usually lasting at least an hour) which included blood work and other tests.Subsequently, I sent a letter with a copy of the physical exam to the patient summarizing results. However medicine evolved over the next 20 to 30 years in ways which forced me to alter the way practiced medicine in order for my practice to survive. The standard for primary care became patient volume as visits were shortened to 15 minutes, government regulations prevented me from drawing blood in the office, letters became impractical, and the hour‐long history and physical eventually disappeared. MDVIP arose out of the need to reverse this trend and thereby provide quality wellness care, disease prevention, and time intensive disease management. After almost 30 years of traditional practice, I affiliated with MDVIP in 2009 so that I could spend an adequate amount of time with patients, focus on prevention and wellness, and basically practice general internal medicine the way it should be practiced.

In my new practice, I love what I do and enjoy coming into the office every day. Seeing fewer patients allows me to spend more time with each person and in so doing, focus more on prevention. We now schedule 30 minutes for a routine office visit and an hour and a half for a comprehensive physical. As of January 2011, new cutting-edge blood tests from the Cleveland Clinic made available through MDVIP will allow us to better predict and hopefully prevent heart disease. As a compassionate listener, I hope to give the time that you need and the quality you deserve.

My background

My wife and I were both born in Cincinnati and my family resides here. Needless to say, I love Cincinnati and have a vested interest in staying here. I graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois in 1973 and subsequently went to medical school and received my MD degree from the Medical College of Ohio (now the University of Toledo) in 1976. I spent the next three years doing my residency in internal medicine at the Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. In 1981 I became board certified in internal medicine. For two and one-half years I worked in a nonprofit clinic in New Richmond, Ohio, a medically underserved area. Since 1982 I have been in Anderson Township, a suburb of Cincinnati, starting in solo practice until Dr. Robert Osborne joined me in 1989. In 1994 we formed a group practice of four physicians. I have previously served as Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at Mercy Anderson Hospital and currently serve as a member of the hospital’s medical executive committee. I have served as a medical consultant to Humana (previously Choice Care) for many years and now serve as the Chair of the Quality Improvement Committee of the Cincinnati market. I have a continued interest in diabetes, have given many talks to doctors and nursing staff, and am a professional member of the American Diabetes Association.
